Journal Collections
Each year, Project MUSE adds a select few journals to its signature Journal Collections that are sold to institutions and libraries worldwide. There is no fee or cost to publishers to participate in the collections, and MUSE returns annual royalties from collection sales to the publishers. All Collection Journals are in the Premium Collection, and MUSE offers additional smaller collections designed for different kinds of libraries.
Selection Criteria
Project MUSE bases journal selection on criteria such as:
- Coverage in selective indexes
- Library holdings
- Recommendations from librarians and scholars
- How well the subject matter fits with the rest of the collection (mainly arts, humanities and social sciences)
- Open access journals are not added to the Journal Collections
Publishers can submit journals for review throughout the year. The review process to select new journals takes place in late spring through the summer. Newly added journals debut in MUSE in January of the upcoming calendar year.
Titles in the Project MUSE collections reach millions of users in institutions of all types around the world. A consistent annual subscriber retention rate demonstrates that libraries and users find the MUSE collections an essential resource for teaching and research.
